CF-MLB Jacobs Cylinder Break-In

The President's Message mentioned the completion of cylinder installation, with successful break-in flights on November 13, 19, and 28, totaling 6.7 hours. The break-in procedure involved flying at low altitude to maintain high manifold pressure. The flights were enjoyable, with no noticeable oil consumption, and the ADS-B Performance Report was passed successfully.

Bomber Command Museum – Part I

On May 13, 2023, The Bomber Command Museum in Nanton, Alberta, celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Dambusters' missions. The event featured engine demonstrations, a presentation by Richard de Boer on the history of 617 Squadron, and replicas of famous bombs. Future discussions will expand on the significance of the Halifax aircraft in Canadian history.

Cavalier Engine Swap Part 2

In mid-February, the author retrieved a newly overhauled O-320 engine for their Cavalier airplane. With help from Gerry MacDonald, the engine was successfully installed despite some challenges, including the need for new mounting bolts. After a test run and adjustments, the flight was successful, revealing improved performance and smoother operation.

SuperSTOL Update (2014-12)

The SuperSTOL is ready for flight pending Transport Canada’s final paperwork for MDRA inspectors. It features a Rotax 914 engine producing 115hp, weighing 897 lbs, and boasts good ground handling and night flying capabilities. The author is hopeful for flight authority soon, despite previous delays and ongoing adjustments to the aircraft.

CAVU Dreams (2014-08)

From mid-May to August, significant work was done on a 1953 Cessna 170B following a concerning engine inspection. After evaluating options, it was decided to replace the original engine with a Lycoming O-360, enhancing performance. Despite increased weight and some initial issues, the owners are pleased with the outcome and eager to fly again.

CAVU Dreams (2011-08)

In July 2011, a group of pilots from the CRUFC embarked on a flight to Oshkosh, facing challenging weather conditions, mechanical issues, and customs procedures along the way. Despite setbacks, including an engine malfunction, the group ultimately enjoyed their time at Oshkosh, sharing stories and exploring aviation. The adventure spanned nine days, covering 28.2 flight hours.

CAVU Dreams (2010-06)

May was disappointing for flying, but the author enjoyed a weekend with favorable weather, flying with a neighbor and his wife to an annual breakfast. After performing an annual inspection on his plane, he plans to add a spinner for dynamic balance, which can reduce vibrations and enhance engine performance.

The Cessna 150 project is complete after a year of upgrades, including avionics, a new engine, and a conversion to key-start. The installation went smoothly, with improved performance and no leaks observed post-swap. However, the plane unexpectedly gained 35 lbs, complicating future flight training arrangements within legal weight limits.

The writer's perfect flying day takes a harrowing turn as an engine failure leads to a forced landing in a neighbor's field. The emergency reveals oversights in pre-flight checks and decision-making. The experience serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the importance of regular forced landing practice with an instructor to sharpen piloting skills.
