The annual trip to northwest Ontario involves visiting Judy’s mother in extended care. Despite delays in test flying the rebuilt aircraft, a successful first flight occurred just before departure. The author also engaged in aviation-related activities, helping a nephew with a float plane and a local friend’s aircraft issues, culminating in an enjoyable Turbo Otter flight.
March and April pose challenges for flying due to variable weather, including snow, rain, and muddy runways. The author shares a recent experience with mud while emphasizing the risks of airframe ice. Anticipation builds for upcoming flying events, notably the COPA AGM in June and EAA AirVenture 2013, fostering community connections.
The author is considering the installation of a Lycoming O235 engine on a VP aircraft but is unsure if it’s suitable due to its weight and horsepower. They’ve reinforced the fuselage and purchased the engine with a solid history. An inspection indicated it appears in good condition, and feedback is welcome.

In November 2000, I purchased a partially completed Kitfox Classic IV project. After six years of modifications, my first flight ended in an engine failure, leading to a crash. Through extensive repairs and engine upgrades to a VW engine, I addressed multiple issues such as fuel starvation, overheating, and valve problems, ultimately achieving successful flights.
The month was productive for flying, despite mild winter weather and snow. While many pilots need maintenance before spring flights, annual inspections become busy from March to June. Plans for the aircraft include a 500-hour magneto check and potential ski installation. Options for skis range from expensive retail to self-built designs.
October provided great flying conditions with warm weather and light winds. However, I faced engine issues that turned out to be lead-fouled spark plugs, resolved after maintenance. Additionally, I explored the concept of "elementary maintenance," clarifying tasks owners can perform on their aircraft without AME approval, underscoring aircraft owner responsibilities.
September arrives with warm weather, coinciding with fly-ins scheduled in Lethbridge and Lacombe. The author reflects on summer repairs, including a successful alternator swap for the Christavia aircraft and highlights innovative products seen at Oshkosh, such as advanced avionics and Bluetooth radios, while encouraging readers to share their own experiences.
In July 2011, a group of pilots from the CRUFC embarked on a flight to Oshkosh, facing challenging weather conditions, mechanical issues, and customs procedures along the way. Despite setbacks, including an engine malfunction, the group ultimately enjoyed their time at Oshkosh, sharing stories and exploring aviation. The adventure spanned nine days, covering 28.2 flight hours.
The author recounts a summer vacation in Calgary, initially planned for Terrace, BC, but ultimately spent at a lake cabin. Highlights include attending a fly-in breakfast, dealing with a malfunctioning airplane starter, and various local flights. Despite challenging weather, the week culminated in 10.2 flying hours and preparations for an upcoming Oshkosh event.
