The author achieved a Private Pilot’s License in 1980 but found aircraft ownership financially challenging. Discovering kit planes reignited their passion for flying. After moving to Calgary, they enjoyed flying a Macair Merlin, which provided an economical experience. While recently acquiring a Piper Cherokee 180 offered advantages, the Merlin remains their favorite.
This month, aviation activities included flights and a fly-in golf day with friends. Progress on the Buttercup is slow, with thoughts about a future aerobatic build. A new Bearhawk LSA model, noted for its light weight and fuel efficiency, has piqued interest. The author continues working on the Buttercup while considering future projects.
The arrival of spring brings anticipation of the rainy season, with concerns about moisture levels impacting activities. Appreciation is expressed for club members' contributions and assistance during meetings. The narrator reflects on family history involving German POWs during WWII. Future discussions on Calgary's history are also anticipated.
In May, promising weather accompanied successful events like the Sundre Mother’s Day fly-in, featuring nearly 200 aircraft. Despite poor weather thereafter, training progressed with almost complete night rating hours. The author reflects on a vintage Hawker Hurricane, once played on as a child, now set to appear at Oshkosh, rekindling family aviation ties.
