My First Solo

The author's journey from Yugoslavia to becoming a pilot in Canada spans decades. Despite limited resources in their home country, they pursued aviation through model building, skydiving, and Air Force training. Finally, after years of dedication, they soloed their handmade V-max in 2017, cherishing every moment and investment in their passion for flying.

Late Winter Mountain Flight

On March 20th, club members flew into the Rockies, marking a winter flying experience. Piloted by Katerina Zima, the journey included eight pilots and six planes, showcasing the CRUFC's capabilities. After lunch in Invermere, they returned via Calgary, enjoying scenic views and gaining valuable flying experience. The day concluded with a smooth landing at Kirkby's.

CAVU Dreams (2015-02)

On February 1st, during a flight to Red Deer Lake, the narrator experienced a catastrophic aviation accident after colliding with another plane. Despite crashing, the narrator survived with injuries, including a dislocated knee and broken ribs, and received prompt medical assistance. The aircraft, built over 26 years, was irreparably damaged.

CAVU Dreams (2014-10)

This month, aviation activities included flights and a fly-in golf day with friends. Progress on the Buttercup is slow, with thoughts about a future aerobatic build. A new Bearhawk LSA model, noted for its light weight and fuel efficiency, has piqued interest. The author continues working on the Buttercup while considering future projects.

The author recounts their initial unfamiliarity with gyroplanes and researching them after an employee's suggestion to use autonomous air vehicles for laser scanning. They express concerns about safety before discovering ArrowCopter's AC20, which emphasizes safety with its unique design. A firsthand experience in an AC20 flight proves enlightening and alters their perception of gyroplanes.

From the Cockpit (2014-08)

Oshkosh 2014 was a remarkable aviation event featuring over 10,000 airplanes, including the One Week Wonder project, where volunteers built a complete aircraft. The unveiling of Sonex's new Turbo engine showcased technological advancements, while the Ultralights barn highlighted innovative designs. The experience was unforgettable, celebrating the spirit of flight and aviation progress.

As spring approaches, the author faces aircraft maintenance challenges, including a costly carburetor rebuild. Despite having an AME license, unexpected expenses arise during inspections. Considering future aircraft for aerobatics, the author explores options, weighing the benefits of light biplanes and potential rebuilds, while acknowledging regulatory hurdles for aerobatic approvals.
