Now semi-retired, he enjoys family life and seeks to promote aviation through club involvement and community engagement.
After years of indecision between aviation and engineering, the author pursued an AME license at age 40, fueled by a passion for aircraft maintenance. Graduating from SAIT, they gained hands-on experience in aviation, leading to a licensed career. Recently, they signed off on complex aircraft tasks, marking a fulfilling achievement.
As my term as club president ends with Christmas, I reflect on our journey and the enjoyable experiences with CRUFC. We've enhanced our presence online and welcomed new members, but continuous promotion of our passion for flying remains vital. I'm grateful for both current and past executives, and look forward to future adventures together.
The summer has been enjoyable, despite busy work schedules. Highlights included a canceled trip to Three Forks due to severe weather, followed by a successful journey to Oshkosh with a friend. Family day trips to Invermere and Crawford Bay provided fun swimming and beach experiences, showcasing the joy of flying and adventure together.
As November begins, the author reflects on winter preparations and the importance of acclimatizing to colder weather. Many general aviation pilots, including CRUFC members, find excitement in cross-country flights. The author, after two years of restoration on a 1946 Champ, embarks on a journey with fellow pilot Stu Simpson. Their trip to southern Saskatchewan encompasses fuel stops, scenic views, and valuable experience, reigniting the author's flying confidence.
The Calgary Recreational and Ultralight Flying Club hosted its annual COPA for Kids Day on October 2 at Chestermere Kirkby Field, providing 32 children their first flying experience in various aircraft. Supported by seven pilots and seventeen staff, the event was enjoyable for both kids and volunteers, leaving lasting memories for families involved.
September was filled with enjoyable flying experiences, including a successful "Fly for Pie" event that raised $305 for the COPA Freedom-to-Fly Fund, featuring various aircraft. Despite weather challenges, the postponed COPA for Kids day proceeded well. Additionally, work resumed on the Buttercup plane, tackling landing gear installation difficulties.
As fall approaches, it's time to reflect on our progress as a flying club and individual pilots. We should consider our achievements over the summer, future aspirations, and the integration of new members. With opportunities in aviation available, including leadership positions for the upcoming election, it's crucial to engage and support one another.
