The Air-berta Air Rally on August 27, 2020 was a long but eventful day. The journey from Edmonton to Manning saw warm welcomes, generous gifts, and interesting encounters. The rally ended with a close race and a warm reception at Drayton Valley. Overall, it was a rewarding three days of flying, with 25 airports visited and 28 takeoff/landings.
The first Airberta Air Rally took place with clear weather and light winds. The pilot made multiple stops, including Rocky Mountain House and Red Deer Forestry strip. They met fellow rally participants and visited non-rally airports for historical significance. The day ended at Bassano Airport, where they were warmly welcomed. The group plans to continue the rally the next day.
Since joining CRUFC in 1994, the author has built two planes: a Minimax and an RV9. While the Minimax excelled in quick takeoffs and simplicity, the RV9 offers better cruising performance and advanced instrumentation. The transition revealed stark differences in handling, performance metrics, and flight procedures, ultimately favoring the more capable RV9.
