The flying club has evolved from informal basement meetings to seeking a permanent community home after 25 years. Members envision a comfortable facility with amenities for socializing, meetings, and recreational flying. The goal is to create a welcoming space that fosters camaraderie, connection, and shared passion for aviation, while avoiding financial burdens.
After nearly a year, the author sold his 1947 Aeronca Chief, which required significant effort to restore. The buyer, inexperienced with tailwheel aircraft, received guidance from the author. Following the sale, the author began searching for a replacement plane, considering various models like the Cessna 170 and PA-20, amid challenges finding the right one.
The summer weather has hindered flying plans, with August proving disappointing. School has resumed after 18 years, leading to challenges with orientation, but support from instructors boosts morale. The course involves practical hands-on training and safety measures, while tool purchases assist in meeting requirements. A busy month limits article production, but future updates are anticipated.
In May, I transitioned from Encana, working extensively on my cottage near Bashaw while attending aviation events in Calgary. Highlights included a memorable flight to Vulcan and participating in a Poker Run. I also sold my Cessna 150 after six months, leaving Carstairs quieter with fellow aviators grounded.
Summer has arrived, bringing pleasant weather and successful events like the poker run, won by Troy Branch despite his late arrival. The trophy for the worst hand will be presented at the next meeting. The Corsair project is ongoing, and excitement builds around Warren’s new video and future films. Enjoy the summer!
The 2006 Air Adventure saw four pilots travel from Calgary through various locations in Alberta and British Columbia over five days, experiencing challenges including headwinds and refueling issues. Despite these obstacles, the journey through the mountains showcased breathtaking views, camaraderie, and the essence of adventure flying. Part two is forthcoming.
The month was busy, highlighted by my brother's wedding in Hawaii after fifteen years. I discovered useful guidebooks and enjoyed some activities but missed opportunities for diving and visiting Lindbergh's grave. I took a helicopter tour and rode a BMW motorcycle with my nephew. My propeller is ready, and the Poker Run is approaching.
This winter has brought mild temperatures and minimal snow. The recent annual dinner and auction was a success, thanks to Dave Procyshen. Appreciation was expressed for contributors and reports on various topics. Upcoming meetings promise engaging discussions, including insights from search and rescue missions. A former plane owner transitioned, and exciting new projects await.
March brings lingering cold weather, but flying trips are underway. The successful annual banquet had 57 attendees, thanks to Dave Procyshen. Last chance for raffle tickets before the March 12th draw. Upcoming events include the annual rust remover on April 4th and presentations on seatbelt design and a Rotax 912 engine.
