As fall approaches, it's time to reflect on our progress as a flying club and individual pilots. We should consider our achievements over the summer, future aspirations, and the integration of new members. With opportunities in aviation available, including leadership positions for the upcoming election, it's crucial to engage and support one another.
In July 2011, a group of pilots from the CRUFC embarked on a flight to Oshkosh, facing challenging weather conditions, mechanical issues, and customs procedures along the way. Despite setbacks, including an engine malfunction, the group ultimately enjoyed their time at Oshkosh, sharing stories and exploring aviation. The adventure spanned nine days, covering 28.2 flight hours.
The author narrates an adventure involving a faulty engine starter that led him to replace a solenoid. After a successful installation, he decides to fly but encounters sudden severe weather. Despite strong winds and rain, he skillfully manages a safe landing. The experience boosts his confidence in his flying abilities, although the original issue remains unresolved.
The summer season is thriving with various events, including fly-in breakfasts, the Arlington air show, and upcoming ones like Oshkosh and the Lethbridge air show on July 23-24. A tower tour at Springbank is scheduled for August 11. Although regular meetings are paused, members are encouraged to visit flying fields.
After completing his RV10 build, the author sought out a suitable painter, ultimately choosing Grady at Glo Custom. A successful trip to drop off the plane included family vacations across the U.S. and careful weather planning. The journey culminated in returning home to Canada, embracing the freedom of aviation travel.
Over the past month, despite heavy rainfall in Calgary, there were enjoyable flying experiences, particularly the 56th Annual Camrose Fly-In Breakfast. Pilots took off from Carstairs, showcasing strong communication and adherence to procedures. The event was well-attended, with over 100 aircraft registered, concluding a successful day of flying and camaraderie.
The journey to Dallas for painting the RV-10 was spontaneous, beginning with a call on Sunday morning. Despite weather challenges and adjustments, Troy and the narrator navigated successfully, experiencing various terrains and delays. They enjoyed in-flight activities, cleared customs quickly, and finally arrived, reflecting on the unpredictability and enjoyment of their adventure.
Captain Wade Miller of WestJet Airlines, a seasoned 737 pilot and instructor, shared a unique simulator experience with a friend. After extensive preparation, they operated a state-of-the-art Boeing 737 simulator, navigating challenges and executing takeoffs and landings. The session offered valuable insights into the intricacies of commercial flying, enhancing their appreciation for the aircraft's complexity.
April brings spring warmth, allowing for work in the garage, although time is scarce due to customer demands for aircraft inspections. The busy schedule has hindered personal projects, but flying events are on the rise. Pilots are reminded to update their skills according to regulatory requirements as the flying season approaches.
As a pilot, I'm excited to return to Oshkosh for the 2011 event after attending multiple times since 1992. Our group plans a similar expedition to 2008's, departing July 22. Despite the complexities of arrival procedures, they are manageable. I invite fellow club members to join for this enjoyable trip, requiring over a week’s vacation.
