CAVU Dreams (2009-05)

This month has been a significant milestone, marking my completion of AME school after transitioning from a job at Encana. Despite the tough job market, I secured a position at Klarenbach Aviation. I also enjoyed flights and family projects, culminating in a successful Mother's Day Fly-in Breakfast with record attendance.

From The Cockpit (2009-05)

As May begins, a busy summer of flying events is anticipated, encouraging attendance to support hosts. An experiment from Myth Busters tested if an ultralight could take off on a moving conveyor belt, promising intriguing results. Lastly, gratitude is expressed to event organizers and an invitation is extended for the May meeting featuring a guest speaker.

CAVU Dreams (2009-04)

March experienced challenging flying conditions due to adverse weather, but upcoming summer days look promising. Key aviation events, such as the Rust Remover meeting and Western AME Symposium, took place, featuring a presentation on Springbank's new Class C airspace. Innovations like the new Eagle EMS fuel system were showcased, offering significant advantages.

Carb Heat on with Cruise Power!

Aircraft operation is significantly endangered by carburetor icing, which is often unnoticeable to pilots until power loss occurs. Conditions for icing commonly arise at temperatures between 20°F and 65°F with high humidity. Preventive measures include maintaining appropriate air temperatures and monitoring humidity to mitigate the risk of icing effectively during flights.

RV-10 Building Process

The author is building an RV-10 aircraft, prioritizing speed, fuel capacity, and family travel. This quick-build project began in 2007, featuring a glass panel with autopilot and ample storage. Progress includes completing the empennage, wings, and engine installation. The project nears completion, with final tasks pending before the first flight.

My Mark IV Avid Flyer

After two years and 349.8 hours, my Avid aircraft project is nearly complete, awaiting inspection. I share my challenges, from acquiring parts, which were often difficult, to constructing components in my unheated garage. While Aircraft Spruce's service was disappointing, I ultimately succeeded in assembly and engine installation. Performance figures will follow post-flight.

CAVU Dreams (2008-03)

The past month featured enjoyable weather and a successful Annual CUFC Banquet and Auction, raising $850 for the COPA Emergency Action Fund. The author shared insights on carburetor ice, detailing its three types: fuel vaporization, impact, and throttle ice, highlighting the importance of carburetor heat to mitigate these issues.

From The Cockpit

The author reflects on the changes and evolving plans for building a plane in his new garage. Inspired by Ken Beanlands’ Wittman Tailwind project, he sees potential in it despite some issues. He discusses ongoing projects, training needs, and the use of his trailer for various aviation tasks, emphasizing a busy summer ahead.

CAVU Dreams (2007-05)

The author reflects on making modifications to the Buttercup aircraft following the acquisition of a Tailwind design. The introduction of a powerful O-320 engine promises enhanced performance, speed, and climb rates. Suggested changes include expanding fuel capacity and omitting leading edge flaps to increase structural stability and flight capabilities, aiming for greater efficiency and speed.
