From the Cockpit (2011-01)

This summer has been great for flying, with various events fostering community connections among aviators. Sharing experiences in different aircraft enhances skills and confidence. As meetings resume on September 9th, appreciation is expressed for Bernie Kespe's contributions. The club seeks a new director at large and encourages safe flying with friends.

Polish Aviation Museum

The author recounts a fall vacation in Eastern Europe, especially in Krakow, Poland. They describe flights on Dash 8 aircraft, highlighting the impressive speed and performance of the Dash 8 400 series. The focus then shifts to the Polish Aviation Museum, showcasing over 200 aircraft, including Poland's historic PZL P11.c fighter, symbolizing the nation's resilience during WWII.

The First Year of Merl

Stu Simpson has been flying his 1991 Macair Merlin, "Merl," for a year since his beloved Green Giant was destroyed in a plane crash. He compares the two planes' designs and performance, highlighting Merl's advantages like better visibility, comfort, cargo space, and improved landing options. Despite its challenges, Merl is a rewarding and capable aircraft that has allowed Stu to explore new flying experiences.

And Merl Makes Five

Stu Simpson recalls his encounter with a Macair Merlin in 1992 and his eventual ownership of it fourteen years later. Following the loss of his Green Giant in a crash, Simpson acquired the Merlin and began extensive modifications, including an engine change and wing tank installation. Despite initial challenges with the aircraft's ailerons and oil pressure, Simpson resolves these issues and successfully test flies the plane. He expresses his satisfaction with the aircraft’s STOL performance, speed, and roomy cockpit, expressing his hope that it will be his final aircraft. Simpson acknowledges the help and support of the CUFC members throughout the project.

Flying the Renegade

The author shared their experience flying the Renegade Spirit, from overcoming overheating issues to mastering taxiing, takeoff, and landing. They noted the airplane's sensitivity to controls, visibility challenges, and the joy of flying it.
