Desert Flying

Today, I attended the cactus desert fly-in at Casa Grande with friends, exploring backcountry flying and camping essentials. We admired vintage planes, enjoyed formation flying by young pilots, and flew to a desert landing spot. After a scenic day in the air, we celebrated with milkshakes, marking another successful flying adventure.

Late Winter Mountain Flight

On March 20th, club members flew into the Rockies, marking a winter flying experience. Piloted by Katerina Zima, the journey included eight pilots and six planes, showcasing the CRUFC's capabilities. After lunch in Invermere, they returned via Calgary, enjoying scenic views and gaining valuable flying experience. The day concluded with a smooth landing at Kirkby's.

Flying by Feel

The author reflects on the evolution of ultralight aircraft and personal flying experiences, particularly the importance of instruments. Despite lacking instruments initially, the author learned to fly by feel. After experiencing an instrument failure, the author successfully managed the flight using GPS, reinforcing the value of understanding one's aircraft and safety protocols.

The flight from Fullerton to San Diego was scenic, navigating busy airspace and following instructions from SoCal approach. The journey included staying clear of restricted airspace, taking photos of the flower fields in Carlsbad, and landing smoothly at Montgomery Field. The trip, which continues to the beach and northward, has been an excellent experience so far.

CAVU Dreams (2011-03)

The author expresses frustration over a harsh winter but continues flying in extreme cold, noting advancements in GPS technology for pilots. They discuss their reliance on GPS for navigation and safety while highlighting various iPhone apps, particularly Air Navigation, as useful tools for flight planning. They ultimately choose the Pro version as their primary navigation aid.

Goose Bumps

On November 2, 1947, Howard Hughes demonstrated the Spruce Goose's flight, changing aviation history. Inspired by this, I pursued my dream of flying, leading to my first solo flight on December 5, 1980. Recently, I ventured on a cross-country trip to see the Spruce Goose, enhancing my confidence and passion for flying.

CAVU Dreams (2010-08)

In the 2010 Air Adventure Tour, the author aimed to visit Arlington, departing from Vancouver. A solo flight along the Pacific coast led to encounters with fog and the Olympic Mountains, resulting in a headache from a steep descent. Despite fewer attendees at Arlington, the experience was enjoyable, fueling excitement for Oshkosh 2011.
