The significant advancements in aviation from WWII to today illustrate the benefits gained despite historical conflicts. Aviators maintain a special bond with their predecessors, cherishing freedom and safety as they take to the skies.
On November 2, 1947, Howard Hughes demonstrated the Spruce Goose's flight, changing aviation history. Inspired by this, I pursued my dream of flying, leading to my first solo flight on December 5, 1980. Recently, I ventured on a cross-country trip to see the Spruce Goose, enhancing my confidence and passion for flying.

As fall arrives, flying enthusiasts seek to maximize airtime before winter. Recent flights to the Vulcan airbase highlight the importance of flexibility and using weather resources effectively. The upcoming meeting features Colonel H.C. “Skip” Armstrong, a seasoned Air Force veteran with notable leadership experience. Participants are encouraged to stay safe and bring friends.
Over the past year, the author enjoyed various mountain flying adventures, culminating in an impromptu trip to Ram Falls with fellow pilots. They tackled challenges like an elevated airstrip with crosswinds but successfully landed. After exploring the park, they returned to Carstairs, reflecting on a memorable flying day. Next meeting is September 9th.
The summer has flown by, filled with aviation events like fly-in breakfasts and airshows. As fall approaches, cooler flying weather and maintenance checks are advised, including rodent control. Excitement builds for the upcoming COPA for Kids event, and members are urged to share their summer adventures at the next meeting.
In the 2010 Air Adventure Tour, the author aimed to visit Arlington, departing from Vancouver. A solo flight along the Pacific coast led to encounters with fog and the Olympic Mountains, resulting in a headache from a steep descent. Despite fewer attendees at Arlington, the experience was enjoyable, fueling excitement for Oshkosh 2011.
This summer has been great for flying, with various events fostering community connections among aviators. Sharing experiences in different aircraft enhances skills and confidence. As meetings resume on September 9th, appreciation is expressed for Bernie Kespe's contributions. The club seeks a new director at large and encourages safe flying with friends.
The author reflects on a vacation, highlighting their participation in the CRUFC 2010 Air Adventure Tour and subsequent work on aircraft maintenance. They faced engine oil temperature issues attributed to a plastic tub obstructing the air valve but eventually resolved the problem. The trip was ultimately successful and enjoyable, bolstered by modern technology like an iPhone.
The 19th annual CFX8 fly-in breakfast was a success, featuring 15 aircraft and approximately 125 served breakfasts under excellent weather. Donations totaled $308.50 for the COPA Freedom to Fly fund. Members of the Calgary Balloon Club participated and plan to bring a balloon next year, fostering excitement for the 20th event.
