The author achieved a Private Pilot’s License in 1980 but found aircraft ownership financially challenging. Discovering kit planes reignited their passion for flying. After moving to Calgary, they enjoyed flying a Macair Merlin, which provided an economical experience. While recently acquiring a Piper Cherokee 180 offered advantages, the Merlin remains their favorite.
On November 2, 1947, Howard Hughes demonstrated the Spruce Goose's flight, changing aviation history. Inspired by this, I pursued my dream of flying, leading to my first solo flight on December 5, 1980. Recently, I ventured on a cross-country trip to see the Spruce Goose, enhancing my confidence and passion for flying.
Flying ultralights is typically straightforward, but the experience changes when pilots attempt to land at Calgary International Airport for Aviation Days. Club members received special permission and a briefing to manage ATC protocols. After initial anxieties, pilots successfully navigated the process, with one pilot expressing relief and triumph upon arrival.
