In this column, the author wishes everyone a Happy New Year while reflecting on the joys of flying and the hard work of those maintaining airstrips. They remind readers to renew memberships and inform about changes to Calgary/Springbank flight frequencies effective February 11, 2010. The annual banquet is upcoming in February.
As the year ends, the author reflects on enjoyable flying experiences, including a recent trip to the Vulcan RCAF airfield. They express gratitude for their presidency and the camaraderie with fellow aviators. Membership renewals and raffle ticket sales are ongoing, featuring appealing prizes. Upcoming speakers promise engaging discussions.
In October, I participated in the COPA for Kids Day, successfully flying 47 children despite cold and snowy weather. I appreciate the volunteers who made the event possible. Additionally, upcoming elections for club positions will be held in December, and membership renewals are due. November's guest speaker will discuss WW2 "Nose Art."
The COPA for Kids event is canceled due to inclement weather. Recent enjoyable flights occurred in September, including a trip to Rocky Mountain House. Upcoming club elections are in December. The successful COPA convention had over 180 planes and 140 volunteers. Guest speakers for the October meeting will discuss their missionary flying in Africa.
In August, the author enjoyed flights, taking a friend new to small planes on a trip to Drumheller and later Linden and Sundre. They appreciated the experience of sharing aviation. A successful event for the club's power line removal was also noted. Monthly meetings resume September 10th, with volunteer positions available.
August has not started well for flying, with only one flight last month for maintenance checks. Despite this, there are upcoming events, including a Fly-in breakfast on August 29 and a successful COPA convention in July. Elections for President, Treasurer, and Director are approaching in December, with meetings resuming on September 10.
The summer flying season offers exciting events for aviation enthusiasts. A recent trip to Vulcan attracted 16 planes, fostering camaraderie and good community relations. Despite strong winds, Bob Kirkby's breakfast on July 4th was enjoyable. Members are encouraged to volunteer for the upcoming COPA convention and contribute articles about club activities.
The Cessna 120 has resumed flights after receiving its Limited STC. Notable flights included the Poker Run and a breakfast event in Camrose, with over 1000 meals served. Emphasis on following flying protocols was highlighted due to busy traffic conditions. Upcoming events include a meeting with a skydiving guest speaker and a fly-out planned for June 14th.
As May begins, a busy summer of flying events is anticipated, encouraging attendance to support hosts. An experiment from Myth Busters tested if an ultralight could take off on a moving conveyor belt, promising intriguing results. Lastly, gratitude is expressed to event organizers and an invitation is extended for the May meeting featuring a guest speaker.
After acquiring a 1947 Cessna 120, the author reflects on a year filled with enjoyable flights and maintenance challenges, particularly a significant engine issue leading to a costly overhaul. Despite the setbacks, the author values the plane's performance and the support from fellow club members, looking forward to future flying experiences.
