The summer flying season is upon us once again and it’s full of fun flying events for aviation enthusiasts like ourselves. The second club event was a trip down to Vulcan to meet with the gentlemen and ladies from the Lethbridge Sport Flyers on June 14th and it was another successful day. I counted 16 planes from both our clubs at one point and it was off to the golf course club house for breakfast and storytelling. Thank you to all who attended both by air and by car to make this annual event such a joy to attend.
I was away on a trip to Alaska while Glen Bishell’s breakfast was held but by all I have heard it was also an excellent day. Mike Sweere reported that they served over 100 breakfasts to hungry pilots and local residents. The local turnout was very good, helping to keep our reputation in the community on the good side rather than the bad side.
Bob Kirkby’s breakfast on July 4th was also a success even with rather strong winds that may have kept some planes on the ground. We made the trip down from Carstairs and although we had 20 mph head winds it was actually quite smooth and being as they were pretty much straight down the runway for landing, it was another enjoyable trip. The ride home was a little rougher, but it was awfully quick with the wind now at our backs and we made it before the afternoon turned a little worse for weather.
I hope to see some of you at the upcoming COPA convention on July 17th weekend. It’s shaping up to be quite the show. You all should have received an email by now informing you how to go about volunteering for the convention. If at all possible, I encourage you to put your name forward to help out in some way. After all the work COPA does for us it’s a great opportunity to give back! I would like to thank Bob Kooyman for lining up John Scharrer to speak at our last meeting. It was a very interesting talk and I’m sure it could have gone on for a few more hours.
I would like to know if one of you would be interested in submitting an article a few times a year to COPA to keep them up to date on our club activities and flying events. It’s always nice to read what other flights are up to and I think we have enough interesting things going on to warrant a few paragraphs to our national paper. Let me or any other member of the executive know if you might be interested in doing this. (Editor’s note: I have volunteered to do this, but if anyone else is keenly interest, I would step aside.)
See you soon!
